Michael Horovitz at Jazz Verse Jukebox
Michael Horovitz, the 76-year-old beat, jazz, blues and protest poet, and singer-songwriter who has edited New Departures for 50 years, and co-ordinated many Live New Departures, Jazz Poetry SuperJams and Poetry Olympics festivals, is appearing on Sunday 12 June at Jazz Verse Jukebox at Upstairs @ Ronnie Scott's Jazz Club, 47 Frith Street, London. Also appearing are Ernesto Sarezale, pen name of a Basque cognitive scientist, poet, performer, stand-up and cabaret act, and video artist living in London. Ernesto founded and co-hosted Homophone, an acclaimed series of poetry readings at the Poetry Cafe in 2002. He has also brought to London the Glam Slam, staged at the Royal Vauxhall Tavern (in 2008 and 2009) and at The Book Club in Shoreditch (in 2010).
Sabrina Mahfouz is an award-winning poet and playwright who has just been awarded a creative residency for 2011 at London's The Hospital Club. She has read her poetry on BBC Radio 1; BBC1xtra; at Glastonbury and Latitude and on stages all over the country.
Dorothea Smartt, born and raised in London, is of Barbadian heritage. She was Brixton Market's first poet-in-residence, and a former Attached Live Artist at London's Institute of Contemporary Arts. She is poetry editor of Sable, a magazine for new writing by black writers.
