Devaluation

We won the war in 1944

Me and Jubb sang that coming back from school

then bought our rocks at The Bonbon shop:

Fruit Pastilles, Gobstoppers, Pineapple Chunks.

We never pinched from the Bonbon shop

because Mr Bonbon would let you off

if you didn’t have enough dough.

One morning we heard him say to a bloke

It makes you wonder who won the war

German cars are better than ours

and Germans all work harder than us

we need to pull our finger out

that’s why the pound’s not worth as much.

Jubb’s dad says rocks aren’t going up

but the pound’s worth less

compared to the lolly

in other countries.

That’s why the black conductors

won’t give us change

when we get on the bus.

Yeah, that's about right, Steve. Original title was The Post-War Consensus. I like that better.

Ray, you asked why I thought not many people had commented on this. The last three lines that Steve refers to may have made readers uneasy, and, as he says, they don't immediately seem to tie in with what has gone before. I linked it with Dominoes because it has similar historic/political references. This kind of theme interests me - I did a recent one called The Winter Gardens - and hope to do some more. Whether the reminiscences and reflections of us old 'uns mean anything to younger readers ... that's the challenge, I guess.

Thanks, Steve. It's a poor poem, to be sure, poorly executed anyhow. But there's a nice idea in there so no doubt I shall return to it one day to try mek a bad ting good.
It's at odds with much of my stuff but I like having a go at different voices, angles, forms.
