An Ode to My Daughter - Listen to your mother
Listen to your mother.
Let me explain what life will be like
if you marry a man that’s unworthy.
Who will make you lose your mind,
sell your soul and enforce you to abject misery.
When you first meet you will feel that nothing
unsavoury can be thrown upon the present time.
That your love is a sultry, slow movement
through symphonies, opera’s and oratories.
But remember he could be a dark chill bastard.
Some are underneath. Lacking their
Mother’s remonstrance. She won’t triumph
In your connection either. Bitch.
You will visit Dr Strong many times,
if you bother with men.
Your life will be riddled with anxieties. At first
He will soften you with roses and chop out all thorns.
What’s it going to be eh?
A life of freedom, travelling the world?
Drinking juices from exotic fruits like
The ice cream bean and mangosteen?
Riding pillion along a dust ridden track
As scenery glides by , a technicolour film?
Or spent with a bellowing bull?
Who chooses to grow the damn flowers,
rather than buying them.
Complains about money and controls you?
He will, from the tip of your hat
To the end of your stiletto?
Men are good for one thing and some, the
Truth is some aren’t good at that.
His sexual prowess will disappear
Like Kilvert’s lard melting into fat.
Oh it’s all Justin Bieber now.
Life and love is like an ice cream,
Waiting to be bitten and licked.
Actually Justin will, WILL act at some point
Like a little prick. Listen to your mother.
I am not a man hater in general but I wrote this poem when I was feeling particularly angry and despondent.
