A Heywood Fallen Hero

                   A Heywood Fallen Hero

He wore his combat jacket daily,

Proud to have served but

He was ruptured,

He would talk sometimes

About his service,

And claim his ‘James Bond Moment’

And we all understood,

But never gave him time.

His intelligence far

Surpassed the humble

Background from which he hailed,

And we all understood that too,

But he languished in

A flat that restricted and contained

As he tried to get the help that he

Deserved for he served remember

And lest we forget we say;

As authority covers up the many

Who commit suicide,

Now he’s dead!

For Derek!

I just realized, that figure is at least 112. Andy Egan who I signed my detachment over to in Al Jabayl has just passed away. He took over from me in December 1991, a great fellow. Died of sudden heart attack in August. Buried at Runcorn Cemetary. He was only a couple of years younger than I. 42 I think. A sad loss.

To quote a role call from the Film Zulu; You're alive Derek.

I was told that this guy had killed himself. Damn it I cried tears of sadness for the fellow. Now I'm told that he is still around, alive and kicking.

Just goes to show, that despite the passing over from Soldier to Civilian, everything is still rumour control. Just like the Mob, whereby the last to know are the troops on the ground.

Well, the guys is alive, next time, to make sure, I will attend the funeral myself. The poem stays because many do try to kill themselves when leaving.

On the last cound I heard, over 111 Gulf Vets have died since Gulf War 1. Many of them taking their own life.

Derek, you should keep in touch mate. And yes, people are spreading rumours about you.

Stay well my freind.

Mike
