Our Guest Poet

David Bateman

Originally from River Hill in rural west Kent, David Bateman came to Liverpool via Middlesbrough and Leasowe. Having had a severe stutter as a child and teenager, he finally had successful speech therapy in Liverpool in 1980, and has since performed his poetry widely, winning numerous poetry slams and competitions, including the Liverpool Poetry Slam Championship 2007.

As well as poetry, he writes stories and occasional scripts and articles, and since 1998 he has been self-employed as a writer, earning his living from a combination of publications, performance and creative writing tutoring, the latter including much work in mental health day centres.

His poetry for children has appeared in over 20 anthologies.  

“Merseyside’s most popular performance poet” – Merseyside Arts Magazine.

“A marvellous poet” – Pete McGovern (songwriter of ‘In My Liverpool Home’).

Just By Chance

Two gifted folk singer-songwriters, Andrew Jones and Liz Owen turned duo, In doing so they combining their talents and honed their music towards a folk/pop sensibility.  The result is a fantastic accoustic sound, lyrics that matter, feet tapping rhythms and musical hooks that don't let go.  That is to say nothing about the harmonies, and oh what harmonies!

Just By Chance are going places - soon to be opening for Joan Armatrading at the Liverpool Philharmonic Hall!

If you travel from afar, we will accommodate and make sure you get a good chance to read at a time that allows you to make any travel arrangements back home.

Everyone who attends can read- open set, inclusivity is everything!

We will be video recording poets and musicians reads/performances (by request) in high definition 1080p. This is something that can be added to Youtube or facebook pages. A very fancy camera will also do a lot of clicking. If anyone does not wish to be filmed or photographed- no problem.

Poems by poets filmed for use on YouTube; 'May' now be considered for publication by 'The Merseysider'. With a member of the magazine reviewing the videos we now place on YouTube.
