Our Guest Poet

Roger Cliffe-Thompson

His front room was once a reconstructed crime scene (Alan Dunn's 'Scene for a small crime), or rather his front room was used for a commissioned artistic work that involved the reconstruction of a crime scene.  Artistically a good fit, for daily life is a source that Roger taps well; kitchen sink relationship poetry where sadness appears between the knowing frowns and I told you so's.  Social commentary comes with aged hoodies and 'blinged up scooters' and missives or rather 'missiles' from Olympic security on tower blocks.  But not to worry, his poetry brings mirth and laughter not to mention a zen philosophically that knows its 'shit'.

Our Guest Band

Laura James & The Lyres

Whispering, enigmatic, sliding from cut glass to a soft whispering reed…Laura's voice slips beautifully between differing keys.  The Lyres centre stage Laura, with tasteful arrangement of strings - low key and subtle.  The perfect accompaniment and the kind of powerful understatement that Ethan Johns is renowned for.  I can hear an indie-folk sound near to that of Laura Marling, but at times she has the elegance and innocence of a Joni Mitchell and the turn of phrase of seasoned Jazz singer. But don't take my word for it listen to the tracks below;

If you can listen past the undoubted quality of the voice and instrumentation, you will also hear real songwriter at work, this is music for poets!

‘Today I went back to an old place of mine

An old familiar place

I was scared by what I find

By what I have to face

Crocodile Tears’

‘The streets are paved with gold

Where summer lies’

‘Oh River run lonely

Into you I cry

Oh wont you console me

I come to your bed each night’
