Appearing on the shore: new anthology of Beatles poetry

entry picture

The wave of Beatles tributes after last year’s 50th anniversary of Love Me Do is continuing into 2013 with the launch of an anthology including poems by Simon Armitage, Carol Ann Duffy, Philip Larkin, Adrian Henri, Roger McGough, Elaine Feinstein, and Carol Rumens on Thursday 7 February, at Cardiff’s Chapter Arts Centre.

Newspaper Taxis – Poetry After The Beatles is edited by Phil Bowen, Damian Furness and  David Woolley, and published by Seren. The words “newspaper taxis” are included in the surreal John Lennon song, Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds, on the Sgt Pepper album.

The publishers describe the book as collecting “poems that both respond to the music and to their influence on the way we lived then and the way we live now … this book is a response to the Beatles' creativity and capacity to influence successive generations”. In 2011 Seren published The Captain’s Tower, an anthology of poems to mark the 70th birthday of Bob Dylan.

All royalties from the sale of Newspaper Taxis are being donated to Claire House Children's Hospice, serving children and young people of Merseyside with complex medical needs since 1998. Thursday’s launch evening of poetry and music starts at 7.30pm, and entry costs £2.50.

Even The Beatles were capable of improvement.
