Whole lot of shaking going on: poets join fight against fracking

entry picture

Write Out Loud names Laura Taylor, Joy France, Neil Fawcett, Jeffarama, and Solomon Scribble will be performing poetry on Friday and Saturday, 10 and 11 May, at Camp Frack, at Mere Brow, near Tarleton, Lancashire. It’s billed as “ weekend of activity in opposition to fracking and other forms of ‘extreme energy’ - as well as in support of the fight against unemployment, austerity and the growing threat of climate change”.  Fracking – hydraulic fracturing – involves fracturing rock layers by a pressurised liquid to extract gas or petroleum. The process is highly controversial because it causes micro-earthquakes. Two “seismic events” in Blackpool in 2011 were probably caused by drilling, the firm Cuadrilla has admitted. Cuadrilla has five sites in Lancashire, and recently announced plans to drill in the south of England, in Sussex.

I'd be well up for doing something too. They are fracking here in West Sussex...
