Animal magic: Carol Ann Duffy fires off poem after badgers remark

entry picture

A remark by a government minister about “badgers moving the goalposts” that captured the nation’s imagination has inspired the poet laureate, Carol Ann Duffy, to compose a new poem.  ’22 Reasons for the Bedroom Tax’ . Her knockabout  poem includes weasels, ferrets, skunks and polecats, among many oher animals, and concludes: “But only the Bustards have broken the bank.”  A few days ago the environment secretary, Owen Paterson, when accused of moving the goalposts in regard to figures about the official cull of badgers, counter-claimed that the badgers had moved the goalposts, not him.
