February Morning

I´m sitting here thinking about
that young guy
in the paper
who probably lives
somewhere close to me.

He went to work early
last week
when it was still dark
on the same footpath
where I walk
almost every day

He was in a hurry
to catch the subway
and listening to music
on his cellphone

Just an ordinary guy
at the age of 24
going to work
a damp february morning

Then, all of a sudden
he gets attacked from behind
hit to the ground
and three more guys joins
starting to kick and beat him

One of them yells
"Shoot him, shoot him!"
and the attackers discuss
what they will do to their victim
if they will shoot him or not
with the gun
that is pointed at his head

Then they run away
and the victim
drags himself bleeding
into the woods nearby
the woods
where I often go in the summer

A stranger helped him
and took him to a hospital
and the young guy survived
the ordinary guy who lost his trust
to society
at age 24

The police says
he just happened to be at the wrong place
at the wrong time
of course, that´s how it always is
for those who are the victims of violence

It would just have been
a small note in the local paper
hadn´t there been
two similarly brutal attacks before
in the same area

The madness has now arrived
to my little corner of the city
and there´s no safety left here
in this place that I dearly love

Great words on such a sad event. I know these kinds of events well, having survived one or two.

Won´t go to the woods when it´s dark, promise. ;) (You seem like a lovely couple by the way.)

Thank you so much Starfish! Yes, it´s been somewhat nightmarish but I noticed that I actually felt better after having written about it, seeing it a bit from that poor guy´s perspective.

This is really well-written. All the more horrific because it is true.
