from How Deep is the Sky
photo credit: Bill Cottman So I have a riddle for you: Why is the sky blue? Now of course you can just keep reading and the answer will be given to you in a few lines or you can pause here and imagine an answer that allows you to contemplate an original possibility. One possible response is because the dominant color of the visible light spectrum is blue. At least that's a simple answer, there are more complicated answers that I don't understand but I get that one. Another reason the sky is blue is because behind the light is infinite darkness and that backdrop colors everything, dimensions of blue shade sky from powder blue to purple to blue black; the deeper the dive the darker the sky. The sky is deeper than the ocean and much more vast because it holds earth and holds the universe in its domain. But the sky isn't always blue, some days its red or orange. Some times its green or gray colored by threats of tornadoes and thunderstorms, but when the sky is clear we believe we can see forever. On forever vista days I'm free to say no. And by saying no I'm saying yes. Yes, to art that's been on the periphery of life for so long. Yes, to my story in the universe. Yes, to a free falling adventure of reverse osmosis into a bottomless abyss. I don't know anything for sure except a feeling that I understand, perhaps in a new way, an echo from James Baldwin's The Fire Next Time has revisited me recently, The very time I thought I was lost, Baldwin wrote, my dungeon shook and my chains fell off. Also May 22nd 2014 was the 100th anniversary of the birth of Sun Ra and he inspired me to imagine a bottomless sky with many colors and shades.
