Honoured
As I gazed out on St Ives beach, the sea, the sky, the sand, I never saw it coming as I went to lick my hand.
It cost me two pounds fifty, two scoops with clotted cream; but pleasure is so transient and joys not as they seem.
Of course, I saw it wheel away with its triumphal scream which seemed to mock, "You dozy get! I've half-inched your ice-cream".
No, I never saw it coming and some may think me dull but I think I was honoured by that daring herring gull.

Thanks for the comments, Daniel. Apparently they "cruise" the seafront at St Ives on the lookout for dozey gets like me.
Harry - my dad told me that in the navy they used to catch them by tossing them bread from the ships with string attached (to the bread, I mean).
