entry picture

There’s still time to play your part in a mass creative project to create a new memorial to the first world war, made out of words. Letter To An Unknown Soldier – exemplified by the statue at Paddington station, left, - is asking for letters and poems to help create a snapshot of how 21st century Britain views the first world war, 100 years on. It has been created by Kate Pullinger and Neil Bartlett, and commissioned by 14-18 Now. During the first world war over two billion letters and 114 million parcels were handled. So far Letter To  An Unknown Soldier has received 15,000 letters from all over the country, and from India, Egypt, South Africa, China, Australia, Canada and the US. Leading poets who have contgributed to the porjectinclude Andrew Moton, Benjamin Zephaniah, Daljit Nagra, Hollie McNish, Jackie Kay, and Owen Sheers. But it is open to everyone to take part in. The project will remain open to receive letters and poetry until 11pm on 4 August – the day Britain declared war on Germany in 1914.
