Red Mind
At first glance it seemed like a pleasant happenstance,
When I found you and your alluring words.
You entrapped me in a tangle of clever epigrams.
I was hopeless after that, I was captivated by the mind I loved.
We would quip back and forth and words were fluid
As is the way your lips would curve and curl around my name.
It seemed at one point or another that maybe, perhaps.
And then we ruined what could have been before it started.
We overanalysed and feared and thought and thought.
And voiced our thoughts inaccurately.
And now here we are, tired from our dance
Resigned to a weary form of dim exchange
Where words lose flavour and laughs sound thin and polite
If we weren’t so capricious maybe we could have stood a chance
But you broke me and I hurt you and we suffered before we loved
And we spoke before we thought
Or maybe we thought before we spoke.
