An Unexpected Ghost In The Yorkshire Post

An Unexpected Ghost In The Yorkshire Post

She stares out at me from the page of white -
all pixels, paper, print and phantom eyes,
a child of contrasts under exposed skies
dancing somewhere between the dark and light.
I recognise the features well, despite
the brutal glare of histories disguise.
This archive feature caught me by surprise
for we are separated by times flight.
You are a ghost that flits across the page,
disturbs my unsuspecting breakfast read.
The spoon stops stirring, knife is laid to rest
and for a while I return to an age
when you would care and nurture, love and feed
your hungry crows before they flew the nest.

thanks for the comment on 'an unexpected ghost...' Graham.
- it's about my mum - she passed away about 5 years ago and about a month after she died a picture appeared in the Wakefield Express (liberal use of a bit of poetic license) 'Past Times/Photo Archive' type feature - and there she was staring out at me. I know it was definitely her (even though the picture was from the 1930's) because my grandma was also in the photo. Came as a bit of a shock and I jotted down some thoughts - only just gone back to it to try and form it into some sense. Hope it worked.

Intriguing Ian,

I wanted to know more though. Who is she?

Ian,
An excellently rhymed and effecting sonnet
which demonstrates the capability of the form for all kinds of purposes.

(I liked particularly line two)
