Genghis Khan's bloodline, and Moll Cutpurse: poets take fresh look at history
A poetry anthology that takes a fresh look at events and figures of the past will be launched on Wednesday 3 December at the Star of Kings pub on York Way, King’s Cross, London. Other Countries: Contemporary Poets Rewiring History is edited by Claire Trévien and Gareth Prior, with a foreword by Hannah Lowe, and includes poems ranging from the “dancing mania” of Strasbourg in 1518 to the bones of Shahr-e Sukhtéh (c2900 BC), via Genghis Khan's bloodline, and the larger than life Moll Cutpurse. Trévien says: “Our research revealed that while there had been a few anthologies of poetry about history, these tended to use the voices of poets of the time rather than contemporary poets looking back.” She adds that history is more than ”just a series of conflicts and bloodshed. As a cultural historian of the French Revolution, I’ve always been much more fascinated with the effect of events on popular culture … than in re-treading the same ground over and over.” The launch on Wednesday is at 7pm, and entry is free.
