An Open Letter to George W Bush from the Statue of Liberty
Dear George
I worried about the hanging chads,
But your opponent was weak.
So did it matter?
At 9/11 I mourned with America.
Shared the horror at this carnage.
Joined the determination to end terror.
Worried about your confused response.
I shrank with horror as you
Gagged librarians with homeland security.
As you gave the inadequate Michael Moore
Credibility he didn't deserve.
I agreed with you
Crushing the criminal Taliban.
Willed you on
As you chased Osama.
Pursuing a criminal murderer
Is not fighting a war.
Guantanamo is not justice
Abu Ghraib is not decency.
With power comes responsibility.
I rejoiced at removing the butcher Saddam.
Despaired at the lies to justify it.
Where are you now?
Powerless to deal with
Syrian terror, Iranian threat, Korean menace.
You have endangered the world
by giving tyrants and terrorists excuses.
Even if you were trying to joke about
Bombing Al Jazeera, you have brought a great democracy
to contempt and ridicule.
Did you achieve all this by yourself?
Was it the god that advised you?
Was it the religious right,
Ranting behind you?
Look to your legacy.
Make a bold, brave, personal decision.
Quit.
Yours so sincerely
Liberty
