It’s A Funny Thing

entry picture

It’s a funny thing

How the world doesn't end

But how it tries

Still everything is foreseeable, some say

And there is a pattern to these things,

Just as the way the milk swirls

Around the coffee cup

The solar system

Relaxes into it’s golden reel.

Even the very scene in this cafe

With its table and chairs

And newspaper

Dated December 1st

Are all part of predetermined plan

It’s cause enough

To make you hesitate

In shifting the pieces,

To lift up this cup even

Risks spilling some seed of fate

As outside clouds gather

And the street goes dark

And a rumble is followed by a moment's quiet

As people run for cover

Like extras in the changeover

Before the final act.

Tom - how many times in how many parallel universes does the same chain of events play out? Like the piece and the thought provoking topic. Nice one.

I'll be pedantic and say that milk swirling in a cup of coffee follows non-linear rules ("chaos theory"), so although it forms patterns, what those patterns will be is neither predetermined nor foreseeable. But it's a good poem and I think it captures well the sense of foreboding that everybody feels as the country prepares for another war.

I always love the winding path of your thought, and its inevitable philosophic depth.

Because this is 'page', take a second and change a typo to 'its golden reel' so that nothing interferes with your impressive imagery.
