Heroes
Heroes come in all shapes and sizes
They don’t all wear secret disguises
They don’t all fly through night skies- protecting the town
Some like Burnden Park Pies and Newcastle Brown
Not all heroes go ‘To infinity
…and beyond’
But have the ability
To create unbreakable bonds
They don’t let life’s problems get in the way
Of loving and living each day after day
They might not save the world from war or despair
But make time for pint to show that they care
Heroes have a passion burning behind their eyes
These passions are what shape them
And sculpture our lives
Idolised and iconic
Humble yet proud
Uniquely atomic
Stand out from the crowd
Heroes introduce, influence, ignite and inspire
Those who produce the experience
Fill our bellies with fire
They don’t always wear lycra
Or tight muscle vests
But carry an insignia
Or a rose on their chest
Heroes are there for every occasion
Like an illicit first pint, or first pitch invasion
Parties and weddings, and the more mundane
Week after week come sunshine or rain
Their qualities can be found in everyone
Our fathers, our partners
Our brothers, our sons
Heroes leave us with memories of greatness
Their blemishes and flaws somehow escape us
They don’t all wear cowls, masks or capes
Some walk amongst us
We call them mates
