Today
The day starts with a huge yawn and aches.
What light through nearest window shines, sodium arc.
The red eyed LED monster displays the digits 05:15.
Time for this aching body to rise and attempt to shine.
Bone and floorboard joints creak in unison,
As if composing the melody for the morning song.
Feeble fingers seek and search for the switch,
With which to flood these eyes with waves of light.
A squinting seeker finds the cold steel door handle,
Opening the entrance to the real world beyond.
Leaving behind the confines of safety and peace.
Forging forward once more into a world tumultous.
Questioning mirror image as a hand reaches out,
Is today a day with medication or not?
The hand is lowered as this answer is already known.
Today, as was yesterday, is a day without medication.
The slightest of sarcastic smiles flickers briefly in the mirror.
Autonomous actions take over from momentary reverie.
Taps are turned, water splashes as the basin fills.
Tepid droplets onto cold floor spills.
So it begins and so it continues.
Day number 18,733 and counting.
