'The Man That Gravity Forgot' by Nick is Write Out Loud's Poem of the Week

entry picture

The new Write Out Loud Poem of the Week is ‘The Man That Gravity Forgot’ by Nick. It’s a poem about loss and mourning, an inability to let go, and includes these lines: “I'm sure I could have saved you / If I were there for you that night / Instead you drank the bottle empty / And turned your wheel to the right.” Towards the end the poem asks: "At the very least can I be / The man that gravity forgot?" In a brief Q & A Nick said his favourite poem was ‘I Will Wade Out’ by E.E. Cummings.

What got you into poetry?

Ever since I was about 11 or 12 and got really into music, I found that writing like the guys I listen to helped me cope with a lot of things going on, like my parents’ divorce, moving etc.

Do you go any open mic nights?

No, because I have horrible stage fright!

Your favourite poem/ poet?

‘I Will Wade Out’ by E.E. Cummings.

You’re cast away on a desert island … what’s your luxury?

My desert island luxury would definitely be some whiskey!

THE MAN THAT GRAVITY FORGOT

by Nick

I still think about you a lot
But in the most selfish way
Wishing I could float my way to heaven
And find the words to say

Are you scared
Are you alone?
Are you happy
Is it home?

I'm scared to move on
I'm alone inside my head
I'm happy when I think of you
Your home is here instead

I wish I could trade you places
But I know that's wished a lot
At the very least can I be
The man that gravity forgot?

So maybe I can float my way to heaven
If I find the words to say
That I'm miserable here without you
And I'll never be okay

December is hard for me
Anyone around can see
I fill my heart with regret
While everyone else sleeps

I'm sure I could have saved you
If I were there for you that night
Instead you drank the bottle empty
And turned your wheel to the right

I wish I could trade you places
But I know that's wished a lot
At the very least can I be
The man that gravity forgot?

So maybe I can float my way to heaven
If I find the words to say
That I'm miserable here without you
And I'll never be okay

I like the simplicity of this work, and its innate idea that death raises/releases the individual to some other plane of existence. The theme is an interesting confluence of religion and science. And well worth the POTW honour.

Merry Christmas.

A marvellous poem Nick with a great title. All the feelings of regret along with the unanswered questions, are simply and well put. I feel that this is something that should be read out loud. If you are not doing so already I would encourage you to do so. Well deserved POTW
Nice one

Very poignant, gently tells the story of loss as the poem unfolds. A dedication to a loved one.
Truly deserving of POTW.

Well done Nick, a fine poem to be chosen. I love the sentiments portrayed here and the simple, almost childlike, questions asked in the 2nd verse - answers to which we can only invent to appease our own sense of loss. I found that being chosen for POTW gave me added confidence to further develop my writing. I hope it will for you too.
All the best, Colin.
