Poolroom Poetry

I love snooker and pool, so I've written some poetry on some great snooker players and matches in history.  I know it's kind of a specialist subject but I hope you like them anyway.

Enjoy,

Rocket Ronnie O'Sullivan

Ronnie's a legend
Ronnie's a survivor
He's gonna fight you all the way

Oh what a thriller
Oh what a wild time
Watching O'Sullivan play!

When Ronnie hits the baize
He can set the place ablaze
With a playing style that's canny and quick

He pulls shots right out the bag
As his rivals start to lag
As he's potting all the balls with his stick

Well, the English really rate him
And the Scottish really hate him
And the Chinese think he's rude and obscene

For when Ronnie's getting flirty
He starts talking really dirty
And his mouth could really do with a clean

But when Ronnie feels the tension
He can go into depression
And his feelings start to get really down

And it really does his head in
When he's playing Peter Ebdon
Who will slowly run him into the ground

But when Ronnie keeps his head
He can knock opponents dead
And the silver trophies start piling up

And his fans are all in heaven
When he makes a 147
And they never, ever want him to stop

Ronnie's a legend
Ronnie's a survivor
He's gonna fight you all the way

Oh what a thriller
Oh what a wild time
Watching O'Sullivan play
Watching O'Sullivan play!!!

The Greatest Game of All

This is a tale of snooker lore
The best game ever played

It took place at the Crucible
Where history was made

In the town of Sheffield
All the masses would arrive

For the Embassy World Championships
In 1985

So they pot the reds, with the cue and white
Then the yellow, green, brown and blue
So they pot the reds, then the pink and black
To see the victory through

Steve Davis was the champion
The finest ever seen
With a wooden cue held in his hand
The man was a machine

Now Dennis Taylor was the man
Whom Davis had to best
The Irishman with massive specs
Who loved to joke and jest

And the game was set and the players met
To dance the final duel
And the game was set and the players met
Which one of them would rule?

Well Davis couldn't miss a shot
And took an eight-frame lead
If Taylor was to win the match
A miracle he'd need

But Taylor mustered all the strength
Inside him to fight back
To take it to the final frame
And then the final black

So the brown he sinks then the blue and pink
To bring him close to winning
So the brown he sinks then the blue and pink
And sends the cueball spinning

Well Taylor tried to down the black
But failed to make the shot
And left his deadly adversary
With an easy pot

Now Davis came to make the shot
That would see him the victor
To everybody's disbelief
He missed a total sitter

And the black stayed out and there was no doubt
The pressure was too much
And the black stayed out and there was no doubt
That Davis lost his touch

Now Taylor rose to meet his fate
His face had gone all red
And as he sank the black
He raised the cue above his head

The game had gone down to the wire
But somehow he won through it
He wagged his finger to the crowd -
"I told you I could do it!"

And the black went down and he won the crown
Oh what a great game it was
And the black went down and he won the crown
To cheering and applause

And the game was done and the battle won
Upon the final ball
And in history it is hailed to be
The greatest game of all.

Kid Delicious

Rolling up, racking up
Packing out the halls
Slamming up, jamming up
Rolling in the balls

Kid Delicious
A cue-ball on legs
Kid Delicious
He's like scrambled eggs

Kid Delicious
Gonna make you smile
Kid Delicious
Playing pool with style

Genius with a cue-stick
Kid knows how to shoot!
Playing all the angles,
Taking all the loot!

Bristol Bob
Was his right-hand man
Told the kid
"Look I've got a plan

On the road
We could make some dough,
What you say?
Come on here we go?"

Figuring out the hustle
Running out the rack
Gonna get some action
Goin' on attack!

Kid Delicious
Travelled far and wide
Bristol Bob
Always by his side

From the east
They would travel west
Setting traps
To ensnare the best

Bob would play the shortstops
Triggering the ruse
All the local hotshots
Thought they couldn't lose

They laid bets
Money rising fast -
"Thousand bucks
Says I kick your ass"

They would shark
Try to make him choke
But the Kid
Never lost his stroke

Playing it with english
Playing it with draw
Leaving all the railbirds
Looking on in awe

Kid Delicious
Became widely known
With a style
That was all his own

That ain't good
For a hustler so
It was time
To be turning pro

Rolling up, racking up
Packing out the halls
Slamming up, jamming up
Rolling in the balls!

Kid Delicious
Played the very best
Kid Delicious
Was a great success

Kid Delicious
I've run out of rhyme
Kid Delicious
Say it one more time

Kid Delicious
'Cos he ain't no fool
Kid Delicious
He's the king of pool

All poetry written by Alain English
