Obsessive Shopping

Obsessive Shopping

Years ago I was impulsive and easily led

A shopping spree when I bought up everything in sight

I was obsessed with the need to possess

to have and own more despite the cost

Sales drew me like a magnet of desire

I rummaged to find style and size together

My wardrobe and bookcase creaked under an excessive weight

When back indoors with my latest booty

I would realise that I had duplicated

if not triplicated what I already had

Years passed as a more seasoned shopper

forays into the citadels of the ubiquitous shopping malls

A keen eye only for what is needed with cost in mind

Ponderously I would think as to whether it was really neceassry

I now window shop for hours

often to return home empty handed

Was it worth the effort I ask myself

as I settle down into a more contented mood

A shopping spree is now a means to encounter the unusual

the unexpected and to value what I already have

Brian,
Thank you for your thoughtful comment. I also think living in an age when we longer repair worn or damaged goods, that we rush out to buy the latest, thus discarding what could be salvaged. Thank you again.

Was it George Orwell who said something like it is the thought of owning something that prompts the purchase. But as soon as it is owned it is no longer important, the next object of desire having taken priority.

Good piece Keith. I'm sure most personal debt is caused by the sort of behaviour you describe.
