Facing the Truth

Facing the Truth

She sits in a predicament of self imposed despair

withdrawn from the world about her

She attempts to create her own reality

which does not exist, but only in her mind

Days, weeks and months pass by as she lives in her cocoon

seldom does she venture outside

Preferring the isolation which protects her

but also damages her health and well being

She lives in a failed marriage of fifty two years

the victim of emotional, mental and physical abuse

Her family of five children have all suffered with her

to become a dysfunctional group of people

A fine mind with a spirit of intellectualism

she languishes in the doldrums of boredom

Filled with regret she sees no escape

her sentence is for life, this she accepts

In need of good company she has lost friends

as she no longer takes the intiative

Her health suffers, obesity affects her mobility

now she is embarrassed by her appearance

A pitiful soul who bemoans her lot

but feels unable to break free and break out

In body and mind she is trapped

only death will liberate this dear soul

Occasionally she admits to having failed

but when confronted with the same she is defensive

She feels she cannot do right for wrong

life has dealt her a losing card

Some have tried to befriend her, to encourage her

others have offered sound advice, but it is seldom taken

And so she remains a prisoner of misfortune

as one day blends into another

OMG...this is a fantastic poem. You have expressed eloquently the hard truth which is that many women live in "hell on earth". Respect!

Martin,
Thank you for your comment. The person in the poem is known to me personally but it makes me wonder how many other souls are in similar predicaments. Many blame her for not divorcing her husband but to have done so fifty years ago it would have seriously damaged her reputation and standing with her wider family. Therefore she suffers on.
Thank you again,
Keith

A fine poem well delivered, all the better that it is based upon and actual person and events though sad that this has happened to this lady.
Nice one Keith

In some ways its an old story,
frequently we all stop from breaking free because of social restraints.
I like how you handle the story, you make it personal which makes me pay attention

Racha and Pat,
After having five children in yearly succession she devoted herself to them, the exclusion of all else. When they had flown the nest she was exhausted and caught in a loveless marriage. She deserved better but did not take the initiative in making a break. Convention and religion became her obstacles. So she lived a lie for the sake of appearances. Had she divorced her husband the world could have been her oyster as she was a bright and talented lady. But it was too late as she had been crushed and trapped. Thank you for your comments and interest in this poem

i just hate how sometimes life doesn't give the simplest things to people that deserve much more because they can be much more

Brian And Anya,
The poem is about someone I know. Her incaceration is largely self inflicted although she would be reluctant to admit it. She had good reason to end her marriage but decided not to which was the biggest mistake. There is some justification in this as divorce in those days was counter cultural and brought with it shame and disgrace. Defeatism has now taken control and she no longer has the will to change.
Thank you both for your comments. As always they are much appreciated.

Keith - very powerful. Is it someone you know? There are a lot of people, men and women, trapped in their situation. Often it's a comfortable situation, but they nevertheless feeled trapped.
