The Follower

The news comes down from ancient Athens-
a follower of Dionysus, dressed to kill,
is unaccounted for. So,
what efficacy in the search;
some insight shone might stop her?
Rich generations or poor
civilisation or civil war
can't put her in a cage
or through a mincer.
The aged and crippled wish
just to live a day longer.

Growing noise makes music
impossible but not obsolete.
The noise can stop- not the music.

You write the odd letter. I write even.
With touching faith we believe
our entwined words make sense.
But we leave a follower of Dionysus
to stumble over her own feet
to be explicit as a dripping blade
a danger to herself and others.
Appeals to humanity are hard to ignore.
Confused, hidden or weak
they grant a follower of Dionysus
freedom to attack as expected.
