Generous
Alain English saw "Generous" by Micheal Healey at the Finborough Theatre, Earl's Court on Wednesday 13th January 2010
This show has been hailed as one of the early highlights of the year in the London Fringe and rightly so. An intelligent look at human morality through the spectrum of Canadian politics, "Generous" contains plenty of funny lines and memorable performances.
The play begins at a chaotic moment at the top levels of government as Prime Minister Marc Brancois (John Sheerman) is forced out of office after a vote of no-confidence. The rest of the plays sees the aftermath of this, following a random selection of a characters from a power-hungry CEO (Jane Perry) and the journalist (Scott Christie) with who she has an affair to a divorced judge (Karen Archer) and her estranged daughter (Meghan Popiel).
The cast work well as an ensemble and bring a vitality and realism to their characters, playing off each other very well. I liked Jane Perry as the CEO, playing an obviously ruthless yet still sympathetic character. She works well with Scott Christie as the well-meaning journalist. I also liked Meghan Popiel, as she brought a real strength and depth to her character.
The script, although never being overly worthy nevertheless contains some excellent thoughts on politics and the motivations of everyone involved in it's processes. The first half of the play is hard to follow at times as the different strands in the story establish themselves, but in the second half it all comes together and it's a pleasure to watch.
"Generous" plays at the Finborough until 30th January and is highly recommended.
