Headingley LitFest
The Headingley LitFest is underway and runs to 27th March 2010. This year's festival has the theme ‘A Sense of Place’. Headingley is a suburb of Leeds in West Yorkshire with many literary connections, and there will be LitFest events all over the borough.
The headline artist is controversial Yorkshire novelist David Peace, who will be focusing on his recent novel ‘Occupied City’ – the second installment of his Tokyo trilogy; and on ‘GB84’ his fictionalized account of the Miners’ Strike – 25 years ago this month. The Cottage Road Cinema in Far Headingley will also be showing ‘The Damned United’, based on his novel of the same name, about Brian Clough’s brief reign as manager of Leeds United.
Events for young people and children will include a poetry slam at Lawnswood School, conducted by performance poet Michelle Scally-Clarke; and the Leeds Rugby Arts writing competition, with a presentation for the winner on the pitch at Headingley, at half-time in the Rhinos v Hull Kingston Rovers match; and, in collaboration with East Leeds FM and playwright Peter Spafford, a radio writing adventure for the children of two local primary schools.
Other events include readings and literary walks, an evening of short stories and a poetry launch, local poets, internationally famous writers, music and open-mic sessions.
