Convoy To The Mekong.
CONVOY TO THE MEKONG.
Forty trucks, one mile long.
Going down to the Mekong.
ACAVs at the front and back.
Just in case of a VC attack.
Six Gun Trucks are there too.
Spread out amongst the queue.
The convoy commander, in his gun Jeep.
Giving out orders to keep things sweet.
Engineers and Mechanics came along.
Just in case things go wrong.
Carrying supplies, troops as well.
Riding in a deuce and a half was hell.
The roads where bumpy, dusty and very long.
Waiting for an explosion from the Vietcong.
Tall grass to the left of us, trees to the right.
The VC kept well out of sight.
Remote controlled mines or a rocket attack.
Would flip a truck on to its back.
Killing the driver and all that was in.
ACAVs start firing oh what a din.
The trucks would keep going through the kill zone.
Commander calls for back up on the field phone.
In come three F-100s carrying Napalm.
To bomb the VC positions and restore calm.
Engineers sweep the road for mines.
The convoy regroups back into lines.
ACAVs take point, on with the show.
Convoy moves off steady but slow.
The men in the trucks are twitchy and scared.
Gunners in their turrets outwardly stared.
Helicopter escorts, Cobra and Loach.
Keeping a watch on the approach.
Convoy moves out like a long winding snake.
Men in the trucks take a long deserved break.
Cleaning their weapons, eating some food.
Waiting for Charlie, their just in the mood.
Thirty klicks to the Mekong.
It’s been a while, since we heard from the Cong.
Mekong Delta here we are.
Now we’ve made it let’s find a bar.
