Good one Becky.

It has its place however in small doses. For example, the use of 'lol' is quite effective, though until recently my wife used it extensively but she thought it meant 'lots of love'. (Perhaps that proves your point Becky.)

Thanks Rachel I believe you are absolutely right . What does it say about society that is constantly sucked into this way of thinking. I have constantly battled in the past on whether to publish any of work. Not that I believe I am seeking to be a celebrity At least I hope not...
But you raise and good an valid point. Thanks for mentioning it and reading.

Thanks all so much - I must be having a late life renaissance as my first poetry book was Betjeman's from the late fifties; I still read it and enjoy it. He infused his work with a love of life which can enthrall us. I tried to poach some of that by writing something palatable and nostalgic.

So, thank you Ciaran (welcome), Mark, Big Sal, Douglas, Taylor, Poemographic and Kate. I would like to add Brian that I
agree Sir John would have made more use of rhyming, as that was integral to his work.

Beno, that's too much praise in one go! I'm glad if you get Betjeman's works. Make sure you read his last poem, it's a cracker.

Jon, Suko, Anya, Kristal and Rich thanks for coming "on board!"

a huge thank you for all the encouragement with what is a hugely challenging topic for people to read.I am so grateful to people for taking the time.
I think when we are slamming Govt. functions The DWP, the Home Office etc we often forget that the employees of these dept.s are also suffering - the man who told me off the record he would go home and cry also told me there is no system in place in the Home Office to support staff with the trauma they hear about day in day out. Some of the home office staff are in their teens and twenties like my children, this is inhumane treatment of the asylum seekers and the staff of these depts.I don't want their stories to be lost - they all deserve a voice. Thanks again....I post funny stuff too so stay tuned

I remember this beauty. . .

Just something to keep in mind, Taylor: back then doctors also used to think it something okay to do to be smoking in the delivery room and hospital in general. A lot has changed since then, but the most commendable thing to remember is that you made it through tough times without the help modern people get. Yes it was a struggle, but I'm willing to bet it made you a stronger person for having dealt with it at such a young age. It was Hell I am sure, but look at your successes not your faults to define where you are going and have been.

You've lived several lifetimes already just from what I've read from your first book, Taylor, but you always convey strength when it is needed most. That is inspiring.?

The word choice made it feel like two separate poems fighting for the same page space. But don't take that as a bad thing - it came out sounding great with the word choice, diction, and adjectives used!

I don't want my intentions to be misconstrued, but I've been poking in on your poetry because from what I've seen so far - they always offer a raw depiction of some topic that is unheard of for most folks or just plain ignored.

That is a talent that should be recognized and lauded. It's a great thing what you're doing with your words to bring recognition and acknowledgement, even if for a moment.

I've shot and killed one bird with a pellet gun in my life - and I've regretted it ever since. Even had to bury the poor thing because I couldn't reconcile what I had done. Birds are the last remaining dinosaurs and something beautiful - but regardless, this piece was nicely done.

First line reels 'em in, and the rest just keeps them wanting more.?

Brilliant, thought provoking and amusing poem Randy. A confession would be refreshing in a world of trumped up dating profiles and swiping left and right. Vulnerability should be a desirable trait. ? Google is the one true confessional I reckon.... One look at a search history would give away a lot. Well done on POTW.

Ray,

This poem is completely lovely. I have read it over, and over, and over.
I just stopped writing this to read it again.
The description in it is so rich. It has a nostalgic, past times feel which makes it even lovelier.
As Kate G says, it really does capture innocent attraction in the most wonderful way.
Every line is gorgeous.
I am not normally one who suffers from envy, but I find myself envious of your talents.
When I read stuff this good it makes me wonder why I bother writing.
Maybe one day I will write something this good.
To engage people, and fill them with some awe and joy, as you have done for me with this poem, is a very great gift.
I'm going to print it off and put it in my folder full of my favourite poems.
I have heard the name John Betjeman but that's it. Today I'm going to Liverpool with the girls from work. I'm going to buy a book of his poems and read them over Christmas. If they are anything like this I'm going to love them.
Thanks for sharing this poem Ray.
Beno.

Martin, I think sometimes of how this street of celebrity runs both ways--there are those who sell and those who buy.

I mean, we each, here on WoL could be considered sellers of a sort--what would it be like to be for any one of us to be stalked by the full power of national media?

Really, I believe it has every bit as much to do with appetite as what's displayed on the menu...

Thanks for the nudge, Martin.

An understandable "take" on the current state of politics here in the
UK. But, as Churchill observed, the existing entity is better that the
alternative...a bit like life and death!
The really regrettable aspect is that much of what is being witnessed
now is the result of elected politicians forgetting their proper job of
remembering where they get their power from and setting out on a
course that persuades them to believe they have the "right" to give
that power away without explaining what they're up to.
Imagine any government minister telling constituents "Thanks for the
power you've invested in us. We're now going to give that away to
others you didn't vote for so they can make decisions that affect
your lives. Sorry - what was that? Did you say 'You must be joking'? Well. actually, don't tell anyone - but we're serious."
