Congratulations on your poem of the week Trevor, and also on amply demonstrating that verse that is direct and easy to understand will always garner praise. I wish I could leave my cynicism behind when I muster a poem, but regrettably I find it impossible. So, well done!

Hi Tony. I do like the mixture of paranoia and menace which sits so well with the neat borders. Your cat is a familiar, I think. Excellent poem.

As has already been mentioned we writers of poetry do seem to grab a good deal of inspiration from people watching, which I know is certainly true of me . The weird the wonderful, the beautiful and those who simply melt into the wallpaper.
congratulations on POTW

JC - we appear to be suffering a delayed action version of
human responses: as if waiting for an appropriate time to
make complaint. Why now? The reasons are open to conjecture but
the damage, especially to those in public life, is timeless.

The lines leave us saddened for the loss experienced by
both and the infliction of hurtful honesty at a time
when ease of mind was deserved by both.

You say you think it's funny, but I suspect that isn't really the case. In your place I think I would be pretty damned annoyed! I hope I'm not like these men you portray.
Not to trivialise it, but I couldn't view this poem without making a comment. I think it's a well written, but sad indictment on the male species.

Although not a train (in my case it was a bus) this is my love story so it struck such a chord and will with loads of people. As we poets develop our people watching skills, these encounters drift in and out of our lives quite often.
You have captured it perfectly Trevor!

Congratulations Trevor on achieving the lofty status of second time WoL POTW winner. In many ways this poem is highly relatable to us dreamy poets who momentarily allow our over furtive minds to wander, sometimes inappropriately! But hey, isn't that how all great works of fiction come about? If you don't allow your mind to wander your writing stands still. Cheers, Col.

in setting out to write something fantastical do we find rhymes easier to discover as our minds are less restricted
to a defined purpose or message?

Thanks for the comments Leon, Patricia and Stefan. I was at the Protectors camp in Kirby Misperton in North Yorkshire's last weekend, and people were trying to think of songs to sing because it gets boring standing around at the gate to the fracking site all day if there's no trucks going in, so I got thinking about classic pop songs with lyrics I could subvert while driving home. Really we need something with a good singalong chorus though...maybe I'll come up with something easier.

Thanks for your comments and your advice C?L, as you can see I have edited per your advice and I think you are right. The shorter lines do give the lines more emphasis and the poem more punch.
I was a bit dubious of removing the lidless eyes and gaping mouth bits, but I do think it works. Thanks for the advice, it’s always welcome.

Welcome to WOL. I like your honesty. You will find many 'sad' poets here to match your current mood. But lots of cheerful and cheering ones too. After a bit, you might actually reconsider only sad poems. Or, at least, not so sad.
Keep writing. Neat little piece under your bio. I had to laugh. You have a good touch with self-humour.

Hard-hitting and only too accurate in many situations. Very well expressed with sincerity and style. An interesting viewpoint, speaking after the fact, whether by death or some kind of hospitalization.

Really good, with tension maintained and developed well, right to the very end, climaxed with 'a smile' and ' speech' from the invader. I hope it's not a real experience.
It boggles the mind, but I've been considering posting my own work called 'Woman in a Corner' written years ago. Perhaps I still will, and you will be shocked at the similarity.

I like this a lot. Very clever and sincere too.
Are you deliberately using 'loanly' or do you mean 'lonely' - 'alone'? I could work with either, but it is a stretch. Genuinely interested.

literary drowning and dripping with imagery. Nice work Desmond.
I have a couple of suggestions if I may. Firstly, is the repetition of 'gaping' and 'lidless eyes' needed? Secondly, where you have commas I would choose to start a new line, for example:
The river flows turbid
barely moving
I think to spread this out would give each short line greater impact and clarity.
All the best. Col.
PS: weirs are frightening places and just the word is enough to send shivers down the spine. As Suki implied, the word sits well within the context of the poem alongside turbid, stagnant, detritus, decay, lidless, eddies and others.

Hi Cynthia!
I also wrote a poem about the moon, years ago when I was a young child- my first poem in fact.
I love this, the flow of it and the subtle humour of it. It mad me think deeply and laugh at the way human minds work.
Thank you for a wonderful poem!
