There is so much poetry about just now that I felt obliged to complete this part two of a poem I blogged before but left this `spell` out (because the first one seemed to go on for ever).

I`ve repeated the first few stanzas of the first one so the readers of this could `get` what it`s about.

Excess can be overwhelming in many aspects of life if
allowed to take control.
Collins English Gem Dictionary:
Lust - n. sensual desire; carnal appetite; v.t. to have
passionate desire.
Lusty - a. vigorous, healthy
Perhaps a little lusty lust is best?

Take care of those bronchial tubes, Harry. Still, an "itis"
makes a change from those tedious "isms".
By the way, I believe that the three of us can justifiably
lay claim to being the senior contributors on WOL, with -
I estimate - a combined total of approximately 210-220
years between us. But isn't imagination a wonderful
thing? bettered only by memory in certain instances - whatever the age.

An illuminating programme and desperately sad. Simon Armitage read Hughes very well and offered, what seemed to me, a useful insight into the poet's effectiveness and approach, and there were touching recollections from friends and family - the male biographer, perhaps too much the apologist, seemed to be unravelling by the end of the tale, & small wonder. Oh, Ted Hughes was the real thing alright.

I think the comments from Laura Taylor give a first
rate first hand insight into this subject.
In other performance arts, agents and promoters
actively work towards getting an audience for
performers. The latter, when successful, will have
their names/reputations to encourage audiences to
come and boost the confidence of the agents and promoters to put on the "acts". Any performance is
just that and we are asked: "Is not a workman
worthy of his hire?" I have no first-hand knowledge
but assume that in the poetry performance world
there are popular gigs where the "paid" approach is expected and completed to common consent.
Poets "on the up" might expect to contribute to
their public progress before being considered to be
audience-pullers and financially viable for inclusion
- and payment...just as there are those who self-
publish prior to moving towards paid publication.

Thanks JC. I had it in mind that there's nothing wrong
with honest lust between consenting parties and lucky
souls should make the most of it in this life. The toast
analogy was encouraged by a late breakfast - using
my toaster - but, I have to admit, minus the lust!

Without being too partisan it was very illuminating reading all the comments on this tricky subject. Very emotive obviously , but I will carp back on to my own experiences of being taken completely for granted as a musician (there is a difference between a pro band player and "a performer". The band world is more like being a cog in a wheel as opposed to being "out front."
The sort of bands I was in were booked mostly on corporate events where an agent would take a massive cut on top , the bandleader again a large slice and the rest of the money shared out. A living, shall we say.
My ignorance of the poetry scene is my weakness , so rather than slam for or against any arguments, I simply try to observe the ebb and flow of what happens in the world. There are many amateurs in the music game now, having taken the lion's share due to working cheap.
Am I bitter? not really, as I am now retired and try to face up to reality. I read at open mike nights and have found a great freedom in this. So please forgive my selfishness in not siding either way.

I was once criticised by the organiser of an event (who'd asked me if I would 'Come and give us some of your poetry, I keep getting people asking me to put you on') because I asked about the money. He told me I shouldn't even think about doing it for money, poetry should be free.
So I told him that I would certainly do it for free-but only alonside other unpaid performers, at an event where the organiser charged no admission, for an audience comprised of those who also worked for free, in a venue which was built for free and powered by energy which was freely given by the utility companies.
The response; 'That's just being unrealistic' !

stu,

thank you for writing this.
we suffer the same maladies. all artists are hyper-sensitive to the turmoil happening all around the everything, and through our compulsion to create we reach out in our condition to discover others. it's the cycle of 'read, be read, connect, reconnect' in love, in hate, forever and ever amen.

i'll be sharing this.

We were talking about the Ted Hughes film after the Marsden poetry jam yesterday, Cynthia. I've just watched it tonight on catch-up. Fascinating programme. I didn't realise what a hard time it was for him in the 70s particularly. And Frieda Hughes recounting how she got the syllabus for her O-level, and found both her parents on it. I don't know if you saw this wonderful piece that Cathy Bryant wrote on the 50th anniversary of Sylvia Plath's death two years ago http://www.writeoutloud.net/public/blogentry.php?blogentryid=34328. Write Out Loud remains very proud to have published it.
