Hi Cynthia
Thanks for your encouragement for the Funfair pieces, I really appreciate it. I don't agree this is my best work, it's light stuff, not meant for performance in the most part. I prefer the dark stuff or, at least, the different and pieces for performance.
And you think I'm shy - I can't think why you should think that.

Enjoyed your performance of this at the Tudor John.
Reading it allows me to digest it better and catch the bits i missed (pardon the pun) :-)
I see all kinds of sights when sitting outside homes waiting for a fare. Often find myself wondering too.
Great observations,

Thanks for your comment on 'Flea Circus'. I'm afraid your observation misses the point of the poem i.e. it's the reaction of the audience rather than how the circus really works. Incidentally, there were mechanical flea circuses that didn't have any fleas at all

I like this a lot, the atmosphere is good and I like how you think it's going to be about this killer and then the tables are turned, v.v. good.
I didn't like the title (ha Louise) don't know why, maybe it's too long for me? and i might think about the similes because there are a lot of them, just my thoughts- it's cool love anything in this vein :)

Some good raw imagery particularly the last line of S1 which stood out. Its good to see a writer envoke vivid yet thoughtful portrayals of language in a kind of narrative fashion.

I sure do appreciate your fine work, pushing the boundaries of language in sight and sound, and the relationships of ideas. Somehow it seems rude to call your skill 'craft', it is so finely honed to your genre.

Nothing so calms the spirit as making haiku.
I have a tiny suggestion. Because 'sitting' is a verb and 'burning' is an adjective, would you consider putting 'burning' quite shockingly as 'Red sun burning sets', instead of both present participles at the beginning of the line? Sometimes, it's just such a freedom of word placement that puts poetry into the stratosphere.
Comment is about (blog)
For readers it is so easy to fall into the trap of personallising a poem, as though we have the right to comment on psychological content. And yet, I continue.
This is a social poem which will strike home with many sons, and perhaps might raise the question of why 'proof' of love is actually necessary. Bird-watching together is no small thing. And many fathers don't want scars revealed for very private and valid reasons.
What exactly is 'all of this'?
All of which indicates a very compelling subject, and a well-constructed poem!

Hi Greg I'll probably give Southa whirl at some stage. The North would be a good one for you to get into to because they have quite a high profile. I've done a review for them and have another one in the pipeline, but he just will not take any of my poems. He says he likes them and that they've 'nearly made it', but I don't think my stuff quite fits in with his ethos and he probably finds a lot of my stuff too 'intellectual' ! They also do a pamphlet competition, so if you've got about 20 you think are quite good it would be worth putting them in for that also. Even if you don't actually win it's good to get on the shortlist.

Well written Ann and raising a very valid point. The stats are frightening - anyone know UK ones - here are those for the USA - http://www.dogbitelaw.com/PAGES/statistics.html
Dogs can be a lot of fun and they often seem connected to people in spooky ways, but what would aliens make of the figures? If humanity ever manages to travel between the stars, what would we make of a race that tolerated these sort of attack and death stats from their little green pets?

Hi David. You should give South a go sometime. I found downloading the fiddly form and filling it in less bother than writing a covering letter. The only trouble is, sometimes they put in a reserve list, and you have to wait a little while longer before finding out whether you've made the cut. At the same time the sample poetry in The North, from five years ago in the Poetry Library, seems just my kind of thing, I must admit. Greg

What I can't stand is when dog owners tell me it is because I am scared of their dog that it is getting all snarly and growling. It is my fault. It never does it to anyone else. It can tell I don't like it. But I would like it if it wasn't trying to bite me! I love all animals, except monkeys which give me the creeps. Too human!
