A scurryingly good poem, very scratchy to the senses, and a great followup to the more predictable Halloween climax .

I don't think dogging was yet a thing during my one-year stint as a district reporter in Selby in the 70s. But I'm sure there were a few werewolves about ... I didn't tend to hang about after the end of the district council planning meetings, and high-tailed it back to York ...

Wonderful, Trevor. Anguish and hurt in spades. Brilliantly understated story-telling. It reminded me of Trevor Howard and Celia Johnson and of Betjeman's Pershore Station.
I suppose we all had a different interpretation of what the backstory was, which is a quality in itself, being able to offer different pictures to us all. My own take was a girl thinking of her WW1 soldier who didn't come home.
One of the best things I've ever read on this site.

I would argue that wars generally do have point, though we may not always agree with them. Land grab, ethnic cleansing, empire ambitions etc. We do however tend to see a point in fighting back against the aggressor.

I know it's a liberty Julie, but I have to say that of all the people I worked with Bob Monkhouse was the most intelligent and clever with an audience. A craftsman at his art, writing all is own material . Sadly he was regarded as smarmy and too upper class for most of the funny men, and felt a bit out on the edge. I loved him as a thoroughly lovely guy! Off my chest now.
On with the coat.

Bryan - I didn't say ALL war was pointless - but the inability of the human species to resolve disputes without resorting to war makes it close to pointless ?

Like Philipos my first thought centred on the use of words 'stillborn' and 'midwife', but I believe these are used as metaphors and the poem is not about childbirth at all. My feeling is that this is to do with being left by the man she had planned her future with. Only Trevor knows...
Great poem Trev!

JD.,
This is a well crafted poem, which for many, still deals with a delicate subject. There is a strong element of empathy in the words with a note of optimism which is refreshing. A poem which many will be able to relate to.

Thanks for the comments, Stephen, MC and Ray. I have googled “Paul Jones” and I may have been mislead all these years. According to Wiki (which is always right) a progressive dance of the type I described is a mixer. A Paul Jones is a particular sort of mixer.
No matter. I’d have been buggered trying to rhyme “mixer” rather than “Jones”.
And thanks for the Like, Stephen Atkinson.

Quite a write Trevor - I was humbled reading this - I especially like the ordered way you set out your work, it's what is merely hinted at that gives it the power.
It is very often these subtleties, which drive the momentum.
Thumbs up on this, big time.
Who hasn't sat in a caff on the corner and watched the momentum of an ever changing world.
I'm guessing it is a lady who didn't go full term with a pregnancy - and i know from a family member how devastating that can be.
Great compassionate piece.
P.
