It appears me, mine, and I are more important than communal life and love, inclusive of all beings, known and not.

I think a dab of Gorilla Glue on the hands of runner 2 would help him grasp the baton off runner 1, Kev. But would give him a problem handing it over to runner 3.

We need a few catastrophies
To cull us out a bit
We're overpopulated
The world has gone to shit

Procreation's gone mad
No limits on childbirth
Have as many as you like
I hear a cry? ....Our earth

Can only keep a certain lot
But you just thumb your nose
And procreate for all your worth
(I'm used to rhyme, not prose.....)

Who cares about overpopulation?......

I have often wondered the same thing about birds Cynthia. Birds are completely fascinating, from the beautiful powerful song from such a tiny pair of lungs, to the intelligence that goes into building their nests. Their brains are like nature's original microchips surely! I do worry about birds when the weather starts to get colder as it is now.

I take comfort in the thought that there's more to life than we can see.
And perhaps the senses are particularly relevant in the context of
human life and awareness. Are we designed to exist with those
which allow us to get along without undue stress and strain while
also permitting us to consider things "beyond our ken"....a sort of
"follow on" signpost for our species? I see (literally) the Moon in
the same way - like a stepping stone in the direction of the "distant unknown destination".

Tried and Tired are in many respects 2 sides of the one coin at the best of times. I bet you felt both after the comments BUT please don't tire of writing your feelings, it's the best medicine always... Sometimes there is something about just putting down how it felt, rather than what may be pleasing to others. You invoked reactions, that is the main thing!

Interestingly, if procreation is why we're here (Brian), then there's
irony indeed in the knowledge that the human race is busy f......g

Brian has just gone buggered up
My maiden lovelies hope
And basking in the heavenly light
Of this I could well cope

He says I'll just be fodder
For some juicy worm
How cruel to kill off all my hopes
Before I reach my term

BUT

A great admission follows
He said he could be wrong
Which does indeed surprise me
With views that are so strong ?

Before mankind became sophisticated like wot we are today there was only one reason for our existence...procreation, and that is still the only reason.

And the only certain thing in life is death at the end of it, at which point we rot away eventually into the soil. Sorry to all those expecting more...you've got a big disappointment to look forward to I'm afraid.

On the other hand I could be wrong...

Thanks John for your detailed reading and comments. Glad the idea works - I wanted to go back a long way in time. The Georgian period would not have included cranes but that was the image I had when I spoke of spines. I'll take that liberty for now! The word mantel I have changed to lintel - you were right there.

Appreciations. Ray

Thanks Don, I appreciate your vote of confidence. Thanks Ruth, I've always been a believer in, "Say the things that need saying," but sometimes with some people you give them the chance to do it first. The idea of starting with an apology which is really by you, to you, because they didn't think to, was actually really to be as deeply condescending to the person as possible. Telling them off like a child who has no manners, though obviously less patiently than you would a child.

Ray and Don,

Thank you for your additional comments. I wrote the poem from a perspective representing what most of us face, which is unknowing what, if anything, lies beyond the grave and the enigma of there being any purpose to life. I understand Ray´s "reasons for living" which from my point of view, is that hope nearly always springs (eternal in the human breast) forth to propel our momentum through life. As one who subscribes to a belief system I hope for an eternal life, but what form it takes I have no idea. I am called to be honest and say that I don´t know whether there exists another dimension awaiting us when we die but through faith, I hope for one. Believer or not, we shall discover the reality in the fullness of time.

If there is life after death we may well meet each other for the first time in person and possibly also diaphonous angelic maidens in a cool bar, athough my preference would be for a gay bar. We are destined to wait and see.
Thank you both again

Keith

Deep topic this Don - can understand you changing paths - like many of us I might add. The world of science has changed many of the population's opinions - and there are many bites out of the bun. Churches are closing down and are being sold off at a fast rate over here. These days I just try to be thoughtful to people who are elderly or ill. But from talking to people in my area - many of the kids who start off going to church regularly when youngsters - opt out when approaching late teen-hood in preference to dating. Just accept things for what they are without all the guilt. As to your last bit - I am sure most people consider the after life and the what ifs. It is after all, a very big deal. P. ?
