Good stuff, Keith. We each seek that place of contentment and comfort, in whatever its trappings. Sometimes it's the polished memories of past days. Sometimes it's the big skies of smallness. Sometimes it's the smoky rooms where secret regrets fall into a glass of bourbon with old friends.

Hope springs eternal in the human breast, but where is the origin of this source? I am always confounded by this. A good poem which merits much thought.
Thank you

I think you're right. I feel you carry these characteristics with you through life. Maybe not to the same intensity but they 'ripple on'. Once an activist always an activist. A leopard never changes it's spots? It's in your blood.

Yes, you there, it's your fault
There's nothing wrong with me
My foot was out you stepped on it
How clumsy can you be
Wot? my foot should not be out?
My foot is part of me
Therefore it can do what it likes
So bugger off ......?

John,
The title of this poem stopped me in my tracks. I read it with a degree of trepidation as I am filled with an indescribable horror at what took place during the last world war. The last three lines pose some dark and probing questions into human nature. Ordinary men and women, train drivers, former secretaries, unemployed men and women, many of whom volunteered to partake in in the systematic mass murder of a millions of people with whom they had hitherto lived with for many years with no apparent problems. Is this confined only to the Germans? I think not. It makes one fearful of the future.
Thank you for this. This mass murder needs to be regularly revisited so that we don´t forget what our species is capable of.

This really sparkles Trevor. A nice treat and a clever effect to have North and south combine. Perhaps it needs emphasizing! I love the last verse. A winner.

On another note, we all carry with us our formative years of political awareness and activism. Whether we dress in that fashion or not, those years inform our reactions to the world around us. While I have never been a hippy, my years in the punk scene certainly guide my reactions to things, though no longer my wardrobe. So my question is, does any revolution simply come and go, whether it be artistic or political? I don't think so, the ripple effects go on forever.

Very sad and well described - we all know at least one neglected home I would think. Only thing - I've never seen a 'sheepish cat'!! Sheepish cos it realised its home was really grotty? In my experience cats don't care about tidiness as long as they are fed and do what they want. Nice combination anyway.

Great writing. have always been fascinated/repelled by spiders whose webs are such incredible constructions. There' s a big black one in a corner of my garage, that makes cones, not webs. I have asked him for a truce - I won't disturb him as long as he doesn't jump out at me. It has worked up to now.

great poem Ray. Would you really say it was 'a trap' to think about what one wore? Things were different way back, and one was supposed to always be 'suitably' dressed. You had to have different clothes for London and the country Now thank God one can go almost anywhere with a pair of jeans. Much less timeconsuming and expensive!

Drinkers are inflicters
Who don't really mean any harm
But those who drink full of rage
Should do so ' locked up in ones very own cage.
The none drinkers and none stinkers can enjoy the atmosphere
You'll drink your 7up
While I finish my beer
Cheers to all
Who doesn't judge
And those who know boundaries
And won't constantly nudge
For you to join in on what they see as fun

We were (still are) the gentle people

Now Ruth and I did quickly read
As you can plainly see
And see dk we weren't impressed
Tweedle dum and dee
Wot's tweedle got to do with it?......

Now dk you've upset me
You've junked my hippie set
Who changed the world with love and peace
You now have caused big fret
I'd rather have a tattoo
Of flower, with faded bloom
Than one today of snake-wrapped skulls
All spitting doom and gloom
What else do you decry dk
OK Joe was bit spastic
But Janis when she sung so soft (Thankyou EAP)
Made me go melt, fantastic
You've really set me off dk
I am Aquarian
And proud to come by natural birth
And not caesarian
Wot's method of birth got to do with it?...,...
Dunno. Pretty dumb poet.....

Very powerful Ray - gross inequity is something that I dwell on a lot. Not necessarily to apportion blame, but as a means for recognising the ways in which I am advantaged, and how my life might be different if I hadn't followed a particular path. I really like the way you have written this - gritty and confronting rather than sentimental.

I don't have a problem with guns. I have a problem with people. Gun violence is definately an issue in America. And we all seem to be growing numb to it. I know people who have been in these random shoot ups...lucky to be ok. I also have a family member who was killed tragically and unnecessarily due to police violence. There are many good and responsible people I know who have guns for hunting, sport or protection. Guns are not the problem...people are.
Don...I honestly don't get it either.
