It is our very great pleasure to announce that Les Murray, the great Australian poet, will be our guest poet this month. He will be reading with Tim Liardet.
Les Murray is quite simply one of the most highly respected and most hugely influential poets currently writing anywhere in the world. He has written twenty seven books and won countless prizes, including The Kenneth Slessor Prize for Poetry, The Grace Leven Prize for Poetry, the TS Eliot Prize and The Queen’s Gold Medal for Poetry. Eulogistic, horrific, surreal, sacred, lyrical, unAustralian, controversial,—all these big adjectives have been applied to the poetics of Les Murray. He is a one off, utterly unique of diction, and a member of that select band who induces readers who would not otherwise read poetry to buy his books. Which suggests, like all great poets, he is expanding the boundaries of poetry.
Tim Liardet has produced six collections of poetry. His third collection Competing with the Piano Tuner was a Poetry Book Society Special Commendation and long-listed for the Whitbread Poetry Prize and his fourth—To the God of Rain— a Poetry Book Society Recommendation for Spring 2003. He was recently the Poet-in-Residence at The Guardian. The Blood Choir, his fifth collection, won an Arts Council England Writer’s Award as a collection-in-progress in 2003, was a Poetry Book Society Recommendation for Summer 2006 and short-listed for the 2006 TS Eliot Prize. His latest collection The Storm House is due from Carcanet.
