Frederic Raphael in conversation with Michael Schmidt
In the majestic setting of the Baronial Hall at Chetham’s School of Music, one of our greatest novelists and screenwriters, Frederic Raphael, talks to Michael Schmidt, founder of Carcanet Press and editor of PN Review, about the poems that have moved and inspired him during his long career. Frederic Raphael's novels include The Glittering Prizes (1976), Coast to Coast (1998) and Fame and Fortune (2007); he has also written short stories, and biographies of Somerset Maugham and Byron. His screen work includes the Academy Award-winning Darling (1965), Two for the Road (1967), Far from the Madding Crowd (1967), and the screenplay for Stanley Kubrick's last film, Eyes Wide Shut. Carcanet has published four volumes of his acclaimed memoirs, including the most recent, Ticks & Crosses (2008).
