The Poetry Club presents: Imtiaz Dharker, Brian Johnstone & A C Clarke
Imtiaz Dharker is a poet, artist and documentary film-maker. She grew up in Glasgow, has worked for many years in India and now lives between Bombay, London and Wales. Her collections of poems include Purdah (Oxford University Press), Postcards from god, I speak for the devil and The terrorist at my table (all published by Penguin India and Bloodaxe Books UK). Her new collection Leaving fingerprints, was published in autumn 2009 by Bloodaxe Books UK. Her poems have been widely broadcast on BBC Radio 4, BBC Radio 3, BBC World Service, BBC Television.
Brian Johnstone has published two poetry collections and two pamphlets; his second full collection The Book of Belongings was published by Arc in August 2009. His work has appeared throughout the UK, in America and in various European countries. His poems 'evoke...a sense of spiritual immanence in their slow still spaces' (Scottish Literary Journal); several have been translated into Catalan, Swedish, Slovakian & Lithuanian, and published in the respective countries. In 2009 Terra Incognita, a small collection of his poems in Italian translation, was published by L'Officina (Vicenza). Brian Johnstone is the poet member of Trio Verso, a collaboration with saxophonist Richard Ingham and bassist Louise Major, dedicated to presenting live poetry and improvised jazz-inflected soundcsapes. He is co-founder and currently Festival Director of StAnza: Scotland 's International Poetry Festival.
A C Clarke is a member of Scottish PEN and Scottish CND. She has published: The Gallery on the Left (Akros) and her first full collection, Breathing Each Other In, (Blinking Eye Press). She was the 'Makar' for the Federation of Writers (Scotland) for 2007 - 2008. Her second collection Messages of Change has just been published by Oversteps Books and she was chosen as one of the poets commissioned for Spring Into Poetry with the Alliance Francaise in Glasgow this year.
