We kick off the New Year in style with renowned poet and playwright Glyn Maxwell, with support from Kate Kilalea, whose debut collection is shortlisted for the Costa Poetry Prize

Glyn Maxwell was born in 1962 in Welwyn Garden City and studied at Oxford University and at Boston University under Derek Walcott. He has published nine collections of poetry, as well as fiction, travel writing and drama. One of the New Generation Poets, he has been shortlisted for the Forward Prize (twice), the TS Eliot (three times) and the Whitbread (twice). The Nerve won the Geoffrey Faber Memorial Prize, whilst his superb latest collection Hide Now was nominated for both the Forward and Eliot Prizes. His plays have been staged in the UK and internationally, including Liberty at Shakespeare’s Globe, Wolfpit in Edinburgh and New York, and his reinterpretation of the Jack the Ripper story The Only Girl in the World at Hoxton Hall and Arcola Theatre. He lives in Islington.

Kate Kilalea was born in South Africa, and moved to the UK in 2005 to study an MA in Creative Writing at the University of East Anglia. She has received an Arts Council Award for poetry, and her poems have appeared in books and journals including PN Review, Stand, Magma, Carapace, Pen Pusher and New Coin. A poem on chairs appeared in Martino Gampera’s design book, 100 Chairs in 100 days and its 100 Ways. She lives and works as a journalist in London. Her hotly-anticipated debut collection One Eye’d Leigh was published by Carcanet in 2009, and has been shortlisted for the Costa Poetry Prize.
