In Ornament of Asia, Alice Kavounas writes from the perspective of a New Yorker whose father escaped from his idyllic birthplace in the dying days of the Ottoman Empire to build a new life in America.
Her first collection, The Invited was praised by Alan Brownjohn for its "brilliant lyrical style" and "sharp eye and unfussy lyricism" (William Scammell, The Independent). Helen Dunmore (in The Observer) wrote, "There are no comfortable answers in these tense, demanding poems."
