“Three Days That Changed My Life”

Norman Warwick & Robin Parker of Just Poets and Lesley Farris of Touchstones Arts & Heritage Centre offer a creative writing workshop examining the events that change the course of a life. Think about the days that have irrevocably changed your life.

You may consider the passing of a driving test or the meeting of your life partner or meeting an inspirational hero, or moving into a new home, visiting a new place, reading a book, seeing a film or hearing the piece of music that changed your life forever.

There may also be negative events that changed your life, such as the passing of a loved one, failure at an interview or learning that the dream house you were chasing has just been sold to somebody else.

Perhaps global events change our lives as individuals, such as the assassination of Kennedy, the death of Diana or maybe the new talks between Palestine and Isreal will make our lives better and safer from now on.

During the session we will look at how these events, good or bad, help shape our writing and inform the authorial comment in all that we write. These events perhaps colour the characters we introduce into our work and help us describe human emotions. Maybe, then, all important events shape our lives positively in some way or another, in the sense that “that which does not kill us makes us stronger”.



The arts exhibits throughout Touchstones will also show us how visual artists reveal to us the days that changed their lives.



Members new and old will be invited to link this session to the last session our being “re-cycled teenagers” which produced some great work on a similar topic.



As ever, this will be a session of rapid writing exercises, heated debate and supportive read-arounds. Lots of fun.
