Wordsworth Trust Poet-in-Residence Helen Mort comes to the Village Hall in Greenodd for another scintillating feast of poetry, music and good company.
One of the rising stars among Britain’s young poets, Helen Mort has published three pamphlets - 'the shape of every box' (tall-lighthouse 2007), 'Parallax' (Forest Publications 2010), and 'a pint for the ghost' (tall-lighthouse 2010), has also written stories and plays for both stage and radio, and performed her work everywhere from the Latitude Festival to Buckingham Palace. 5 times winner of the Foyle Young Poets Award, she has also won the Eric Gregory Award and the Manchester Young Writer Prize. Describing herself as “a reformed barmaid who now lives in Cumbria, far from the haunted pubs of Derbyshire,” her collection 'a pint for the ghost', was the Poetry Book Society’s pamphlet choice for Spring 2010. Drawing on the oral tradition of myths and fireside tales, it is a night-time encounter with the ghosts of worked out mines, smoky pubs and deserted highways that encourages a personal emotional response to the ghosts of memory. When she turned it into a theatrical show with the aid of Menagerie Theatre Company and took it to the Edinburgh Festival Fringe last year, it was voted one of The List’s “top five shows to get you tipsy”. It was clearly only a matter of time before Helen came to A Poem & A Pint!

The music for the evening will be provided by Braddyll Friends, a fine bunch of local harmonizers who perform songs of a wide variety of styles and origins. There will be further poetry from the floor - five slots available to read, bookable at the door, and Greenodd Village Hall is equipped with a bar, so Pints on tap.
