CELEBRATE SUMMER WITH A POEM & A PINT
Summer’s here (in theory at least) and A Poem & A Pint is off to Water Yeat at the foot of Coniston Water with two guest poets, Nina Boyd and Julia Deakin, as well as the usual array of talent from the floor and an unusual musical offering from The Cumbria Horn Ensemble, all hosted by MC Kim Moore.
Nina Boyd was the overall winner of the 2009 Poetry Business Book and Pamphlet Competition. Her first collection, 'Dear Mr Asquith', (Smith/Doorstop Books 2010) was described by Andrew Motion as “a collection of cleanly-written and well-organised poems that, for all their efficiencies, are capable of leaving us with an appealing sense of mystery and unfinished business.”
Julia Deakin is widely published: her work has appeared on Poetry Please, she has read on www.Radiowildfire.com and won several competitions, including the 2006 Northern Exposure Prize, and this year the Yorkshire Open and the Torriano. In 2007 she was a Poetry Business Competition winner with her pamphlet, 'The Half-Mile-High-Club', and her first collection, 'Without a dog' (Graft, 2008), was praised by poets as diverse as Simon Armitage (“Crafted, tender poems, written with passion and purpose”), Anne Stevenson (“mature wit and wisdom”), and Ian McMillan (“real linguistic inventiveness”).
The Cumbria Horn Ensemble is made up of horn players from Millom to Carlisle, including teachers, students, and a vet. Started by Jody Moore and her pupil, Sam Holburt, to fill the French - Horn - Ensemble - shaped hole in Cumbria’s music scene, they play all types of music from classical through jazz to show-tunes. Schumann described the horn as the soul of the orchestra; come and see what a clutch of them are like at full throttle!
Plus, of course, poetry from our ever-popular floor-slot poets - book on the door.
Please note that Water Yeat has no bar so the audience is encouraged to bring their own pints.
Price: £4.00. (£4 (Concessions: £3) on the door)
Time: 7:30pm
