Open Mic Event
Contact: othervoices@allographic.co.uk
It’s a simple concept really – a nice function room above a pleasant pub, a stage, a microphone, a bunch of lovely people, and some words.
So – come and show us what you’ve got: step up to the open mic or enjoy the talent on display (ideally both, of course!). If you’re feeling shy about the stage, there’ll be chances to get scribbling for our mini-poetry competition, and we’ve even got poetry amanuenses at hand if you’d like your words heard...
We have featured sets from local luminaries Jessie Durrant, Anthea Lee, and Hollie McNish, with more to be confirmed. Your host for the evening will be Fay “Welsh Whisperer” Roberts.
Our features are a passionate trio of female performers:
Hollie McNish is a whole collection of other words by herself – her poetry influences span hip-hop, grime, and sixties protest songs, while her lyrics themselves span at least five languages. As well as performing her gorgeous poetry all over the country and running workshops and poetry demonstrations with not-for-profit organisation “Page to Performance”, she has played with drum ’n’ bass acts like Beardyman and Jungle Drummer, and was named a Great Briton last year!
Anthea Lee is a speaker of truth. Her words are personal, her rhythms insistent and her rhymes undeniable. She’s an MC and a poet on a mission and she’s coming to get you! Anthea won the Hammer & Tongue Cambridge Annual Slam Final in November and she’ll be treating us to
Jessie Durrant has been performing since February, and has been tearing up the East ever since with her raw rhythms and heartfelt lyrics. She won the Peterborough Annual Speakeasy Slam in May, and the Hammer & Tongue Cambridge Annual Slam Final in July. And she won’t stop there, we’re sure!
We’ll be recording the night for future podcasts and CDs, and we’ll be telling you all about Small Word, a poetry-short-story-photography magazine of petite loveliness that we’ll be launching in Cambridge over the next few weeks, open for submissions as we speak! :)
