This workshop will use visual art works to inspire poems. Participants will be asked to bring at least one image of a work of art they feel they can respond to creatively, and to research a little of the artist’s life and thought in preparation for the workshop.
During the workshop we will look at published poems that use artworks as their stepping off points, discuss how successful and strong they are as poems, and investigate the challenges involved in creating a poem that can stand on its own two feet, independent of the art work that gave it genesis.
We will then do some guided writing exercises in response to the images we have brought and work towards creating an early draft of a poem. At the end of the session there will be group feedback on these early drafts and guidance will be given on how to take them forwards.
