Poems, Translations, Prose: Robert Chandler & Yvonne Green
All four of Yvonne Green’s grandparents were born in the Emirate of Boukhara. From there one branch made their way to England via Europe, the other via Egypt. She was born in London in 1957, and educated at the LSE and the Inner Temple. She practised at The Bar until she retired to publish the poetry she had always written. Her poems are influenced by the many languages and cultures she has always been exposed to. She will read from After Semyon Izrailevich Lipkin (1911-2003) (Smith/Doorstop 2011), which won a Poetry Book Society award; from her first collection, The Assay (Smith/Doorstop 2010); and from her forthcoming novella, The Old Ladies’ Club.
Robert Chandler’s education included an important year (1973-74) at the University of Voronezh, a city two hundred miles south of Moscow. There he encountered for the first time both the poetry of Osip Mandelstam, who was exiled there from 1934 to 1937, and the prose of Andrey Platonov, perhaps the greatest of all twentieth-century Russian writers, who was born on the outskirts of Voronezh in 1899. He will read from his translations of Mandelstam and Platonov, as well as from his own poetry.
