Leicestershire Partnership NHS Trust (LPT) is pleased to announce it has been awarded an unprecedented grant of over £150k by the Arts Council England to develop and evaluate the effectiveness of a three year pilot study, which will use music and literature to help improve mental health.

The innovative study called 'Showcase Smoothie' will help to develop individual talents and use the arts to improve the self-confidence and life skills of primarily young black men with experience of mental health problems - as statistics suggest they are more likely to experience mental health inequalities and greater social exclusion.

The evening will consist of performances by successful 'Showcase Live' and 'Smoothie' projects, music from Leicester band TIMER and key note speeches by LPT, including Dr Mohammed Al-Uzri (Consultant Psychiatrist & Hon. Senior Lecturer), Assertive Outreach Team.

Please RSVP by 20 January 2012. This is a free event but places must be booked.

Showcase Smoothie was launched (1st Feb 2012 in Leicester), where I facilitated a vibrant group of talented young men.

The show was a success and I for one, was proud to see the performance lifted onto the stage with great power and with such vibrancy. There was a mixture of music, rap, acting and choreography. What a journey it had been and I am proud that I got to know each and every one of them.
Together we learned and Roy and I helped them grasp their inner fire onto the stage. It was also a learning curve from getting to know each other to facilitate and then to bring the whole performance for beginning to end.

I had the honour meeting Jean Binta Breeze, who stayed around and watched me polish up the guys with rehearsals and run through.
