ON ART – Tuesday 21st Feb 2012 at the Bar Des Arts, Millbrook, Guildford
This is your invitation to join in the next Pop Up Poetry event, which is to be ON ART at the Bar Des Arts in Guildford, a cosy, stylish venue that hosts a great program of regular arts events.
Art and poetry are often linked together but you don’t have to be a practising artist to write “On Art”. You don’t even have to take the art world too seriously. Why do some art works sell for millions while other artists “starve”?
Do you have a favourite artist, work of art or gallery? You could consider a traditional artistic theme and write a parallel piece: perhaps a “vanitas” (one of those still lifes that includes a skull); a self portrait; a Crucifixion or Assumption of the Virgin, or “The Kiss”, or a family portrait.
And what about the avant-garde – installations that physically invite you into a temporary world; conceptual art like Damien Hirst’s pickled shark or Tracey Emin’s bed? Or abstract art (can you write an abstract poem?).
Or take inspiration from a song – Venus in Blue Jeans, or Vincent, or A Portrait of My Love.
Or write in the voice of an artist or an artist’s model?
If possible, include in your five-minute set a poem on some aspect of art, selected from your existing work, or a new one. We’re also inviting two guest poets to feature, one of whom is also a visual artist.
Please let us know if you’re coming along to read, and include a couple of lines about yourself for us to use when we introduce you. We’ll make a prompt 7.30 start (please arrive by 7.15 if possible) and aim to finish at 10pm.
The Bar Des Arts is a short walk from Guildford Station if you’re coming by train. Fast trains run between Waterloo and Portsmouth every half hour. If you’re driving, there’s a car park opposite the Bar.
We’re looking forward to seeing you, as reader or audience, and all your friends and relations who want to listen, on 21st February – it’s free, so let’s make it a great evening of “Art for Art’s Sake” (remember 10CC?)
Love, Jan and Dónall
(Janice Windle and Dónall Dempsey)
Entry: Free
