Folkpoet is a new night of live arts and literature at the recently re-opened and lovingly revived Island Arts Studio in Herne Hill. Curated by spoken word artist Nick Field, Folkpoet is a hub for poets, performers and musicians who put the emphasis on their craft and pus...h the boundaries of Spoken Word. Folkpoet features fascinating artists; misfits, dandy rebels and charming provocateurs, operating on the fringes of the mainstream spoken word and acoustic music scenes, because this is where the most dazzling and intriguing work is to be found. Discover skilled, honed performers and writers, musicians to cherish and emerging talent at our open(ish) mic. All snugly housed in a lovely, dedicated arts-venue setting.
Unbelievably this event is FREE. Are we spoiling you? Yes, and probably just a bit too much.
Our first outing was a magical, beautiful night of incredible talent. Our second event is shaping up just as well.
Our scintillating line up is:
STEPHANIE GOLDBERG
Stephanie Goldberg writes funny, dark stories and performs them for your aural pleasure. She has written, performed and directed for the stage and her work has been published in Time Out Sydney magazine and Spilt Milk Magazine. As a member of Future Perfect she has performed at numerous festivals. Stephanie brings her beguiling, witty and slightly dangerous storytelling to Folkpoet.
BRIAN LOBEL
Brian is an international Performance Artist whose work encompasses spoken word, dance and live art. Brian creates performances about isolated bodies and the dilemma of community and interactivity. He is interested in all kinds of bodies in his work: politicized bodies, marginalized bodies, dancing and singing bodies, happy bodies, sick bodies and bodies that need a little extra love.

PAULA VARJACK
Hot from Berlin, well actually she’s just hot. You may have seen her pink high heels stomping over Berlin, London, Washington D.C., Chicago, Edinburgh, or Bar 25. You may have shared a cigarette with her at a squat or club or university. The truth is: Paula Varjack is an artist on the move, bringing her own unique infusion of spoken word, videography, and music to stages infamous and abandoned across the globe. Her poems play with the unspoken dialogue in romantic and sexual relationships, the neurosis that plays into the world of urban dating, stories from the edges of club culture.

And spine-tinglingly glorious music from:
JOSEPHINE LLOYD
Songstress Josephine Lloyd has been writing and recording her beautifully crafted songs since her teens, when she found a broken recording machine and a karaoke microphone...Her lyrics are engaging and personal, and she accompanies her haunting, spellbinding vocals with an unusual array of instruments and sounds, spanning numerous genres and creating a unique sound world for each song. A multi-instrumentalist and mesmerising song-writer with a beautiful voice and big things lined up for 2012, we’re delighted to have her play at Folkpoet.
