How do writers see Britain today?
Find out by joining us in celebration of Granta Magazine’s launch of Granta 119: Britain, a bold and candid edition showcasing twenty artists responding to questions of British identity.
Three of those voices, Edmund Clark, Rachel Seiffert and Andrea Stuart will explore disparate expressions of British identity through readings, conversation and a QandA session chaired by Granta Editor, John Freeman.
Granta has published many of the world’s finest writers (Martin Amis, Salman Rushdie, Angela Carter, Ian McEwan, Jeanette Winterson) tackling some of the world’s most important subjects, from intimate human experiences to the large public and political events that have shaped our lives. This edition will be no different.
The examination will be wide and varied, from Edmund Clark's meditative photographic project of the homes left behind in Britain by British Guantanamo Bay detainees to an excerpt from a novel in progress by Rachel Seiffert which examines the close and complicated connection between Northern Ireland and Scotland through the eyes of a child in a Protestant, working-class family.
Andrea Stuart's memoir looks back at the sugar trade, Barbados, her family's difficult inheritance as descendents of slaves and slave owners and, centuries later, her reverse migration across the Atlantic.
